Khimia 2023 attracted the attention of professionals of the Russian chemical industry, chemical researchers, representatives of relevant ministries and university science, as well as foreign business partners interested in trade and investment cooperation with Russian chemists.

This year, Khimia demonstrated strong growth. Compared to last year, the exhibition area and the number of exhibitors increased two and a half times. It should be noted that half of all participants are newcomers.

This year, the Startup ChemZone hosted 11 industry startups and small enterprises, which presented their developments and products.  

The Employment Centre gave the exhibitors an opportunity to place company vacancies, read job seekers' CVs, find necessary applicants within just four days of the exhibition, and get professional advice on the labour market.

Conference programme

More than 30 events were held within the Khimia 2023 conference programme, bringing together interested chemical professionals. Particular attention was paid to the issues of strategic development of the industry, overcoming obstacles to the creation of new chemical production facilities, development of chemical engineering, and improvement of staffing in the chemical industry.

The official opening ceremony of Khimia 2023 was attended by Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Mikhail Yurin, President at the Russian Chemists Union Viktor Ivanov, and First Deputy Director General at EXPOCENTRE AO Sergey Selivanov.

Despite all the sanctions and restrictions that have hit the industry, our enterprises continue to work steadily and implement their development programmes.”

The centrepiece event of the Khimia 2023 conference programme was be the 11th Moscow International Chemical Forum, featuring representatives from the chemical industry, relevant ministries and industry associations. The event was organised by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Russian Chemists Union, and EXPOCENTRE AO.

The forum opened with the Plenary Session on Management of Technological Development: a New Stage in Cooperation Between Business and the State. The event was moderated by Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Mikhail Yurin and President at the Russian Chemists Union Viktor Ivanov.

“The discussion is focused on such issues as the introduction of new and development of existing state support measures, development strategy for industrial enterprises in the era of tightening regulations, production and technological cooperation of state corporations, filling the staff shortage of professionals in the chemical industry, new chemical technologies, and scientific research and materials.”

Mikhail Yurin, Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, emphasised that one of the key objectives of the industry development plan is to involve large chemical and petrochemical companies with raw material base and competences in the production of specialty chemicals.

The speakers at the plenary meeting were Chair at the Chemical Industry Committee of the Business Russia Public Organisation Mikhail Sutyaginsky, President at the Russian Academy of Sciences Stepan Kalmykov, Russian State Duma Deputy Maria Vasilkova, Director General at Roskhim AO Eduard Davydov, Managing Director at Sibur OOO Daria Borisova, and heads of other major chemical enterprises.

The stand of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade hosted an event summarising the results of the Promtech 2.0 start-up competition, which was conducted jointly by the ministry, the Russian Chemists Union, Vladimir Chemical Plant PAO (VLHZ), and the Mendeleev Accelerator.

The PromTech 2.3 competition was launched to support the projects of small innovative companies that will ensure the restoration of production chains disrupted by the outflow of imported technologies, products and raw materials, as well as to attract research teams from universities and colleges to create new high-tech products.

The finalists had the opportunity to take part in Khimia’s Startup ChemZone and conference programme, presenting their projects to private and institutional investors.

  • Panel on Chemical Engineering: Prospects and Challenges  

  • Strategic  Session on Development of Industrial Construction:  Shortening the Customer Journey Towards Creating New Production Facilities for In-demand Chemical Products

  • Panel on Ensuring the Functioning of the Technical Regulation System in the Chemical Industry

  • Panel on Development of the Specialty Chemistry Development Programme: Creating and Promoting Russian Brands of In-demand Chemicals

  • Expert Session on Effective Tools for the Development of Research with the Participation of Industrial Enterprises 

  • Pitch session of business projects of students and young entrepreneurs – The Chemistry of the Future

Khimia 2023 hosted the India National Pavilion for the first time. It brought together 20 companies from this country. The conference programme included a special India Day, aimed at developing cooperation between Russia and India in the chemical industry. The event was attended by representatives of Indian companies supplying chemical products and process equipment, heads of Russian and Indian industry associations, and Russian regional business support centres interested in attracting Indian investments to their regions. The event was moderated by President at the Russian Chemists Union Victor Ivanov. The key Indian speaker was Regional Director at CHEMEXCIL (India) Kumar Siddhartha.

Another important and well-attended event was the Workshop on Anti-icing Fluids and De-icing Agents: Effective Solutions for Road Maintenance and Aviation, organised by EXPOCENTRE AO with the support of Soyuzexpertiza ANO of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event was moderated by Oksana Polyanskaya, Head of the Single Window Centre of Soyuzexpertiza ANO. 

The workshop participants discussed quality control and increasing requirements to the environmental friendliness of such products, modern solutions in the field of utilisation of spent de-icing liquids and existing opportunities for their recycling. Representatives of the Russian aviation industry also shared their practical experience.

The Panel on Turning to the East was dedicated to cooperation with Asian countries. The discussion participants agreed that the ‘turn to the East’ of the Russian chemical industry, as well as other sectors of the economy, is irreversible and promises great new opportunities. However, cooperation with Asian partners in the chemical industry, especially in the context of sanctions, has many difficulties and risks, so it requires an extremely competent approach. The participants heard reports on the specifics of cooperation with China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Turkiye. The panel was moderated by Editor of the Rupec information and analytical centre Dmitry Semyagin. The participants included Vice-President at the Association of Exporters and Importers Pavel Dolgov, Vice-President, Head of the Legal Committee at the Association of Exporters and Importers Arthur Leer, Chair at the Russian-Asian Business Council Maxim Kuznetsov, Deputy Director at Soyuzexpertiza ANO at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Alexey Zavadsky, representatives of  exhibiting companies and other experts.

One more important event at Khimia 2023 was the Strategic Session on Challenges and New Opportunities of Localisation of Production of Critical Chemical Products, which was moderated by Chair at the Expert Council for the Development of the Chemical Industry under the State Duma Committee on Industry and Trade Maria Vasilkova. The discussion participants included Deputy Director of the Chemical Industry Department at the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade Darya Shevyakina, First Vice-President at the Russian Chemists Union Maria Ivanova, Acting Rector at Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia Ilya Vorotyntsev, and heads of different chemical colleges and universities of Russia.  

Khimia 2023 also hosted such regular events as the General Meeting of the Russian Chemists Union, the Conference on Modern Technologies of Water Treatment and Equipment Protection Against Corrosion and Scaling, organised by the Roskhimreactiv Association, the Panel on the Development of the Chemical Industry in the Russian Regions, organised by EXPOCENTRE AO with the support of NIITEKHIM OAO, and the International Tank Container Forum, organised by Tank Container World. In addition, EXPOCENTRE continued its annual Gallery of Solutions for the Chemical Industry.
