The Competitiveness of the Russian Chemical Industry in the New Economic Reality

This was the topic of the strategic session of the 9th Moscow International Chemical Forum - the central event in the conference programme of the Khimia 2021 international exhibition being held at Expocentre Fairgrounds from 25 to 27 October.

The session was moderated by Viktor Ivanov, President of the Russian Chemists Union.

Alexey Krupsky, Deputy Head of the Chemical Industry Department of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, noted that products of the chemical industry are used in all spheres of the Russian economy and play an important role in its innovative development. At present there are about a thousand enterprises registered in our country's chemical industry, employing about 580 thousand people.

The share of the chemical industry in Russia's main economic indicators is growing. In January-August 2021 its growth in the volume of manufacturing industries amounted to 11.38%. The index of production of the chemical complex as compared with the previous year for the same period was 106.3%. And the volume of domestic exports of chemical products grew by 41.7%, exceeding $18bn, according to a representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Participants of the session discussed measures for the development of specialty chemicals, taking into account the plans to increase the output of such products by 30% and 70% respectively by 2025 and 2030 compared with 2020 volumes. The experts who spoke focused on the need to increase domestic production of epoxy resins as part of the development strategy for the domestic chemical complex, and other topical issues.
