Khimia’2009 International Exhibition

03 / 11 / 2009

From 28 September through 2 October Expocentre Fairgrounds hosted Khimia’2009, the 15th International Exhibition for the Chemical Industry and Science. Co-organized by Expocentre and Roskhimneft ZAO, the event was held with support and assistance from the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Russian Chemists Union, the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC); under the auspices of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Moscow Government, the Council of Heads of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of CIS.

Since its launch in 1965, Khimia has been the most prestigious and influential chemical industry forum in Russia and the CIS. It was Expocentre’s first tradeshow to become an UFI-approved event in 1975. Since 1993 Khimia has proudly carried a logo of RUEF, the Russian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs, as a label of quality.

An impressive line-up of respected exhibitors, a broad international participation and a wide variety of products earn Khimia a reputation as the major industry event.

The exhibition occupied 28 000 sqm in two of the pavilions at Expocentre Fairgrounds to showcase raw materials and equipment for the chemical and petrochemical industries; paints, vanishes and lacquers; fuel and lubricants; packages; household chemicals; drug substances; reagents, catalysts, chemical fibers and yarns; composite materials and GRP. The tradeshow demonstrated the latest developments for oil processing and petrochemistry, agrochemistry, organic and microbiological synthesis, biotechnology, design of chemical plants, storehouses and terminals; transportation of chemicals and petrochemicals; chemical technology and research.

Khimia’2009 encompassed Chem-Lab-Analyt’2009, a Specialized Salon for Analytical and Laboratory Equipment, Furniture and Glassware, and the first-ever Chemmash-Pumps’2009 Specialized Salon for Chemical Engineering and Pumps.

This year Roskhimneft ZAO and the Moscow Government arranged a specialized sector entitled “Chemicals by National Manufacturers to Prevent Ice Forming on Roads in Russia’s Big Cities”.

Khimia’2009 had a broad international participation. The list of exhibitors included 594 companies from 34 countries such as Australia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, China, Czechia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Republic of South Africa, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Taiwan, Ukraine, USA, and Uzbekistan.

Belarus, China, Finland, France, and Germany arranged national pavilions.

Among the overseas participants there were AKZO NOBEL, BUSCH VAKUUM, DOW EUROPE, EPC, GEO, HUNTSMAN, LANXESS, MOELLERS, SARTORIUS, SIEMENS, TEIJIN, VARIAN, WOMA, just to name a few.

The list of Russian exhibitors numbered 296 companies and comprised nearly all largest national manufacturers and trade firms including AVISMA, BELNEFTEKHIM, EUROPLAS, ÅÒÊ, KAZANORGSYNTEZ, KUYBYSHEVAZOT, NIZHNEKAMSKNEFTEKHIM, NIKOKHIM, POLYPLASTIK Group, the Russian Academy of Sciences, SIBUR HOLDING, URALKHIMPLAST, FOSAGRO, and the Joint Regional Exposition by the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

A tight event programme accompanying the exhibition became one of its key features. It involved scientific conferences, workshops, technical seminars and presentations. Some of the events covered a variety of issues related to the modern chemical industry and science, while the others were devoted to Dmitry Mendeleev’s 175th birth anniversary celebrated this year.

Khimia’2009 played host to an ICCA’s Responsible Care Leadership Group (RCLG ICCA) meeting held in Russia for the first time ever. The delegates included top managers of industry associations from the USA, the EU, Finland, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Israel, Brazil, New Zealand and Russia; representatives of such multinationals as BASF, DOW, and Dow Corning; world-known leaders in the field of industrial security. The President of the Russian Union of Chemists Victor Ivanov underlined that “Choosing Russia to host the event serves as evidence of recognition and high appraisal from foreign chemical professionals for the work of the Union and the participating companies to meet the requirements of the Responsible Care Programme”.

The exhibition comprised a Centre of Science and Professional Education that ran a number of events as well. In particular, a contest of projects by young scientists, co-organized by Expocentre, D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology, attracted great interest. Held for the third time, it contributed to introducing forward-looking technology and assisting in recruitment to the sector. This year the competing entries included 20 projects by Russia’s 10 leading chemical universities and institutes, namely Tomsk Polytechnic University, Lomonosov MSU Chemistry Department, Lomonosov Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology, Tomsk State University, Moscow State University of Applied Biotechnology, D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology, Moscow State University for Engineering Technology, Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology, Volgograd State Technical University. There was also a contestant from Belorussian State Technological University. 11 prize-winning entries were awarded with contest certificates. Conferences held by the Centre of Science and Professional Education highlighted issues related to innovation trends, recycling of raw materials, introduction of energy and resource saving technology.

The first International Conference on Power and Resource-Saving Technology for the Chemical and Petrochemical Industries was dedicated to sustainable use of energy and other resources. The conference was co-organized by the Russian Federal Agency for Science and Innovation, the Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology and Expocentre.

The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, NIITEKHIM OAO and Expocentre convened a conference to discuss main development trends of the national chemical sector for the near future. The delegates also considered measures to support industry enterprises during the current global recession.

The exhibition attracted a great number of chemical industry visitors, consumers of unique technology, developments, materials and products. The event was attended by over 14 000 chemical professionals; developers, top managers of chemical and related companies, and businessmen engaged in manufacture and wholesale and retail trade in chemical and allied products.

Despite the difficulties of the global downturn, Khimia’2009 provided a comprehensive insight into the state and development prospects of the chemical industry. It created conditions favourable for modernizing the national chemical sector, building cooperation between Russian and overseas companies, and developing investment projects.
